Adventures in Vermont

Vermont is the land of cows jumping over a moon. With all its scenic landscapes, small towns, and Vermont dairy farms, it’s hard to believe that you’re not in Kansas anymore. Of course, there are some great adventures to be had when you need to escape the usual work-day doldrums.

Here are our favorite adventures in Vermont.

Middlebury Gap

Bike Route

One of the most scenic biking spots in the state is located not far from Middlebury College. The Gap is a steep, winding road passing through Norton, and at one point, there are no guardrails which add to the thrill of biking down. It’s best if you go down on a weekday early in the morning to avoid traffic and speeding cars because there isn’t much space between you and them on this narrow road.

Lake Champlain and the Hudson River

Lake Champlain is one of the most beautiful bodies of water in the northeast, and it’s also a great place to go kayaking. For a more challenging experience, try venturing out on a rented boat on Lake Champlain. Many rental places will give you free passes for you and your friends to go out on their boats, which is pretty cool. If you’re looking for fun outdoor activities on Lake Champlain, try these: biking (guides available), horseback riding (Stowe is the best place to rent horses), hiking, fishing, or boating.

A Ski Weekend in Vermont

There’s no better way to spend a ski weekend than in Vermont. It’s so much fun to wake up and immediately take off on a downhill ski ride, then relax with some booze in a warm lodge by the fire, or go back up for more. The bars are always playing some groovy music, and you can dance around all day and night. And for those who want to party hard every night and play tons of hockey all weekend until their drunken balls fall off, that’s just fine too.

Camping with Friends

There are endless possibilities for camping in Vermont. Vermont is the land of the outdoors, so why not spend a weekend on a lake with your friends and family? Or go to one of the many state parks to have a family reunion? You can also go camping by yourself or with other people if you don’t have time for the whole “family” thing. Either way, it’s a great way to enjoy nature.

Blueberry Picking

There’s nothing better than going blueberry picking on a hot August day. You can head to the Blueberry Patch in Waterbury for blueberries and a great atmosphere, or pick your own off the side of the road on Route 100 as it heads north towards Canada. There are also blueberry farms in Waitsfield and other places throughout the state. Just remember not to eat too many, because they have laxatives in them!

The Vermont State Fair

What’s more fun than watching cows jump over a moon? Watching pigs race down a hill! The Vermont State Fair is held every year at the Essex Show Grounds from August 15-20th. There’s always something going on like pig races, cow milking contests, wood chopping, and other competitions. The fair is a great way to get in touch with the Vermont culture, and it’s a fun way to spend time with family or friends for a day. Who knows? You might win one of the prizes that they give out during the Talent Competition!
