The best place to combine modern luxury with a cheap price, at citizenM Times Square you won’t get the usual hotel perks such as bellboys and trouser presses, but you will get everything you need for a comfortable stay. The Sohotel
Just around the corner from Little Italy, The Sohotel claims to be the oldest hotel in New York. Whether this is true or not, they still offer chic and sharp rooms which will surprise you when you realize how much they cost per night. The complex where the Sohotel is located also boasts various hip restaurants and bars, as well as being in the perfect spot to enjoy the city’s excellent shopping opportunities.
Arlo SoHo
A hotel that offers something for all travellers, although Arlo SoHo does have rooms that wouldn’t fit into the budget category, they also have a number of options for those who don’t want to spend too much. Regardless of what you pay, each room comes with a flat-screen TV, work desk and free WiFi. There’s also an on-site rooftop bar which, as well as being the ideal urban oasis, offers fantastic panoramic views of the city.
The Jane
For a unique property by the Hudson River, you should book a stay at the Jane. Originally opened as a hotel for sailors, and once housed survivors of the Titanic after they were first rescued, the Jane’s budget options include bunk and standard rooms done out in the style of a ship’s cabins. Elsewhere in the property, the interior is stunningly decorated in deep reds and gold and is extremely sumptuous for the prices guests pay. There’s also an excellent restaurant – the Old Rose – which serves seasonal Italian dishes.
Pod 51
The first of the now well-known Pod hotels, Pod 51 was a pioneer of the new generation of budget hotels in New York and remains one of the best in the city. As well as the clean and smart rooms, there are lots of other comfortable spaces in the hotel which give you a chance to meet other travellers, such as the cafe, patio and courtyard. It also has a great location, just a few short steps away from Fifth Avenue, Central Park and the Rockefeller Centre.
